Gyms with a sauna

In Sweden a sauna, or bastu, comes with a lot of gyms, usually built into the changing rooms rather than sold as a spa extra. Many of the gyms here sit inside municipal swimming and sports centres, so a pool is often in the same building. Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö have the most choice, and smaller towns are well covered through their local sports centres.

Gyms with a sauna in Sweden

Compare sauna access at gyms in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala.

Saunas are a regular part of Swedish gyms, concentrated in Stockholm and Gothenburg with others in Malmö, Uppsala and Lund, Friskis & Svettis among them.

Before you go, check whether a day card includes the sauna, whether it is switched on outside peak hours and the etiquette, which in single-sex saunas usually means no swimwear and a towel to sit on. A sauna shared with a pool may follow the pool's hours instead.

What to know about gyms with a sauna in Sweden

What differs from one gym to the next, and what to check before you sign up.

Swedish gym saunas are usually inside the separate men's and women's changing rooms and used without swimwear, sitting on a towel. Because the sauna belongs to the changing room, it is normally open whenever the gym is. In a swimming centre the sauna may sit in the pool area instead, which can mean buying a combined gym and swim ticket. Shower before you go in, and many people finish with a cold shower.

Tips

  • Use the changing-room sauna without swimwear, sitting on a towel.
  • At a sports centre, check whether your ticket covers the sauna in the pool area.
  • Shower before you go in, and try a cold shower between rounds.
